Heritage Building Advisors

HBA are historic building surveyors and consultants for Sussex and the South-East.

If you’re restoring, modernising or maintaining an historic building, you need a specialist surveyor who understands how it was constructed, how it should be maintained and how it can be altered.

That’s exactly what Heritage Building Advisors have been doing for decades, surveying and consulting on Listed buildings, ancient monuments and simply very interesting older buildings. We do what we love with professionalism and more than a bit of passion.

We’ve advised on everything from palaces – think Brighton’s Royal Pavilion – to stately homes (Claremont, Coates Castle and Knepp spring to mind); historic museums (the Sir John Soane Museum we’re proud of); and scores of smaller (and larger) domestic homes – each with their quirks, complications and problems, some Listed, some not.

We help owners and custodians understand what they have, show them how their properties should be treated and support them when sympathetic modernisation is needed, from gaining essential Listing building, planning and conservation area consents to overseeing builders and craftsmen as clerks of works until the last minutes of a project. We often work in conjunction with architects, heritage builders and other specialists, such as structural engineers. We’ve won lots of Sussex Heritage Awards and the odd RIBA Award, so others think we’re pretty good at what we do as well.
